BRITAIN: Streetart Lerwick – Shetland Islands – Lerwick Public Art Trail & Shetland Arts

Lerwick is the capital of the Shetland Islands, which belong to Scotland, and with around 7,500 inhabitants it is the largest settlement in the archipelago. Urban art lovers can walk the LOCUS LERWICK PUBLIC ART TRAIL, a great project initiated by LIVING LERWICK in collaboration with SHETLAND ARTS. They also provide a free map with audio guide and run projects like the Mareel Arts Centre, the Bonhoga Gallery, and the Garrison Theatre. These institutions deliver an extensive year-round programme of music, dance, theatre, film, literature, visual arts and exhibitions.

BRITAIN: Streetart Glasgow – Yardworks Murals & Artpistol Projects – Graffiti & Urban Art Collection

The Scottish port city of Glasgow has around 635,000 inhabitants and is located in the western Lowlands on the River Clyde. Worth seeing are the old town in Victorian architectural style, the Scottish Opera, the Scottish Ballet or the National Theatre of Scotland, also a visit to the numerous pubs is recommended, where you can often find live music. Of course, there is also plenty of color on the walls around the streets. The YARDWORKS collective in particular is constantly curating new mural projects and the ARTPISTOL gallery organizes open air exhibitions of urban art.

BRITAIN: Bristol Volksfest – Long Ashton – VW Festival at Birches Farm – Urban Art & Creative Automotive

In 1992, the very first BRISTOL VOLKSFEST was held around a soccer pitch in Almondsbury, Bristol. Founder ADRIAN ASHBY’s idea began as a hobby, offering like-minded VDub enthusiasts the opportunity to display their treasures and exchange parts, knowledge and appreciation for the legendary vehicles. From there, it naturally evolved into one of the UK’s largest VW shows, attracting fans from across the country and abroad every year. As well as the cool vehicles, which are often adorned with airbrushed artwork or creative decorations, you’ll also find graffiti sprayers in action, creating awesome pieces on the adjacent walls with the BUNKER CREW.

Here we have a great collection of urban artworks in the city of Derry or also called Londonderry. The place is close to the border between Ireland and Northern Ireland, which means riots are common. Sometimes it is more calm, sometimes more aggressive. The situation is not nearly solved and there is much tension since ages. You can find a lot of the context of the situation filled into the artworks. Awesome artists are around and try to make the walls more colorful, but as well they put in messages.

Aberystwyth ist just a really lovely, cute place, full of young people from all over the European Union because of its famous university,  which looks like Hogward from the Harry Potter movies. The little refuge is a brilliant destination, if you want to calm down and rest for a while in a chilled area. Close to Aberystwyth is also the small picturesque town of Borth which sits above a vast beach where you feel as if suspended between heaven and earth, between the past and the present.

BRITAIN: Illustrator Junior Tomlin – The Salvador Dalí of Rave

The illustrator and graphic designer Junior Tomlin from London did some of the most iconic and legendary cover artworks for the rave and electronic music scene back in the 80s and 90s up till today. On 5th of June his new book “Junior Tomlin: Flyer & Cover Art” will get released which documents across 160 premium paper pages his work with commentary and draft sketches about thirty years of party scene. Junior is of course still doing his fabulous artworks and visuals, but meanwhile he can look on a huge variety of projects in many different fields like movies or covers for the music branch, he colored comics for Marvel, DC or Panini, was involved in Action Man and Judge Dredd animations, designed vector arts, invented innovative logos and even started sculpturing.

Creativity slumbers within each of us, you just have to pursue these ideas a little and give your imagination a jolt. You should also keep your eyes open to allow inspiration and conception. Art is timeless, just as there are no prescribed rules, a minimum or maximum age, a condition of academic art training or other certificates. The ideas and creativity come from within yourself, the other elements that are certainly helpful are just building blocks that you can use when the time comes. The artist Beth Williams went her own way and creates beautiful pictures and thought-provoking collages with hidden messages.

BRITAIN: Comic Illustrator Johnny Trip – Funny, provocative and sometimes pervert

By chance I came across the funny short comic strips of Johnny Trip, which he posts on Instagram at regular intervals. Mostly one shots, sometimes a few more, often funny, sometimes disturbing, but always holding the mirror up. Johnny Trip paints about the things nobody wants to talk about, puts them into characters and lets them act in the comic. And in this world it’s no problem, it’s just a comic. But Johnny’s comics often have it in them and go way below the belt. He provokes where necessary, mockes incompetent statesmen and horrible dictators, or skillfully packed criticism of religion and politics into his colourful creations. But often it is just the ordinary human quirks that we all know.
