AUSTRALIA: Gold Coast – Swell Sculpture Festival – Open Air Exhibition at Currumbin Beach

The SWELL SCULPTURE FESTIVAL is an annual open-air art festival held at Currumbin Beach on the Gold Coast. It typically runs for ten days in September and transforms approximately one kilometer of coastline into a freely accessible sculpture exhibition in public space. The festival was founded in 2001 as an initiative to bring more public art into the urban space of the Gold Coast and to use beaches as exhibition spaces. Since then, it has become a fixture on the regional cultural calendar and is now curated by a nonprofit organization led by NATASHA EDWARDS, with the participation of various artists and groups.

AUSTRALIA: Brisbane Street Art Festival – BSAF – Awesome Annual Urban Art Event since 2016

The fantastic BRISBANE STREET ART FESTIVAL, or BSAF for short, was founded in 2016 and is now one of Australia’s leading public art events. Every year, the festival transforms building facades, underpasses, and public spaces throughout the city into large-scale murals and installations. Since its inception, over 400 works of art have been created by local, national, and international artists. The program includes live murals, exhibitions, workshops, artist talks, and community projects. In 2025, the BSAF celebrated its 10th anniversary.

AUSTRALIA: Perth – Wolf Lane Urban Art Quarter – Form Public Project 2014 – Graffiti, Streetart & Murals

The Wolf Lane in Perth was originally an unremarkable back alley used primarily for delivery traffic and waste disposal. The first renovations began around 2001, when the city sought to revitalize the lane and better integrate it into the city center. A decisive transformation began in 2014 with the urban art project PUBLIC by FORM, in which the alley’s walls were adorned with large-scale murals by international and local artists. As a result, Wolf Lane evolved from a functional back alley into a well-known creative hotspot in the city center.

AUSTRALIA: Darwin Street Art Festival – Fantastic Annual Urban Art Event since 2017

The fantastic DARWIN STREET ART FESTIVAL, or in short DSAF, is an annual street art event in Darwin, founded in 2017 to culturally revitalize the downtown area and artistically transform vacant spaces. The festival usually takes place over several weeks between May and August with key hotspots including laneways and streets in the CBD such as Austin Lane, West Lane, and Shadforth Lane; in addition, the projects have expanded to suburbs like Parap, Nightcliff, and Casuarina. Since its inception, over 130 large-scale works have been created in the city, resulting in Darwin now being virtually covered in murals.

Cairns is a city in northern Queensland with around 150.000 residents in the urban area and it was established in the late 19th century as a port serving nearby gold and tin mining operations and later the sugar industry. The city has developed a growing urban art scene, with murals and public artworks playing an increasingly visible role in the cityscape. Many works reference Indigenous culture, tropical landscapes, and regional identity, often created in collaboration with local communities. A major platform for Indigenous contemporary art is the CAIRNS INDIGENOUS ART FAIR and the CAIRNS FESTIVAL also contributes through installations, performances, and streetart projects.
