OLAK is a graffiti sprayer from Limassol and has been among the first generation of the community that helped to establish graffiti and urban arts in the streets of Cyprus. He is still active painting in all kind of situations and is involved in several creative projects or events such as the jam JUST HIP HOP or the STREET LIFE FESTIVAL. The neighborhood Taht-el-Kalein in Nicosia is located in the inner core of the city around the historic Famagusta Gate. There are churches and mosques here, but otherwise it is a rather run-down area in terms of buildings and workshops, many of which have been abandoned and lost. Just as the buildings are only half used, so is the graffiti, which are rather bombed and short pieces, but super old ones are still existing. Nevertheless, the place is very interesting and shows a historicity of local crafts development and urban art. This strange border situation changed a lot and keeps it strange. Local artists like especially ASTRAKISTRIKES with her project “Mapping the Old City” try to bring more color and innovative ideas to those quarters.

CYPRUS: Streetart Nicosia – The Graffiti Garages – Two underground levels filled with colors

Inconspicuous in the northeast quarter on the Greek side of Nicosia, along the Green Line with all the partly abandoned houses, but also mechanic workshops and small alternative creative places. Between a school and a sports field, there is an underground car park which is hardly visible from the outside unless you walk past it on the street. It’s a real paradise for graffiti and urban art, a treasure trove of artworks, some of which were made over ten years ago.

CYPRUS: Streetart Nicosia – Around Spyrou Kyprianou – The “Blob Graff” and other Urban Art

The Blob Graff was a graffiti store and a place where regularly workshops were held. You can see the fantastic results and also the remains of it in the backyard. The place does not exist anymore, soon the other part of the building will get renewed. Some of the great artworks on the walls around still remain, but maybe not for long as well. CYPRUS: Nicosia – Ethnological Museum – House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesiso

The House of Hadjigeorgakis Kornesisois is located at Patriarchou Grigoriou 20 near the Archbishopric in the neighbourhood of Saint Antonios. It was the area where the rich Greek used to live and the mansion is the most important example of urban architecture of the last century of Ottoman rule that survived in old Nicosia. It is quite interesting and worth a visit, the entrance is free.

The whole building is painted with awesome murals from the outside, as well each room is colourfully designed in an individual theme. On the new roof top bar they integrated a huge can styled artwork for Montana. So for both, the spray paint company and as well Tony Montana from Scarface. Between the Port of Larnaka and the Larnaka Marina is alongside the coast a huge unpaved parking lot. It’s more of a gravel course. The walls around that parking place are completely covered with awesome graffiti artworks. It’s kind of a Hall of Fame with numerous pieces and also an historic archive.
