Mérida is a small village in the west of the island of Ometepe in southwestern Nicaragua with a population of around 1.000. The chilled place is located at the foot of the Maderas volcano and like the whole island of Ometepe, Mérida was already settled by indigenous groups in pre-Hispanic times, as evidenced by petroglyphs and archaeological finds in the surrounding area. Somoto is a small town in northern Nicaragua and the capital of the Madriz department, near the border with Honduras. The town is located at an altitude of about 700 meters, has a population of around 40.000, and is known for the Cañón de Somoto, a spectacular canyon that was only scientifically explored in 2004 and is now one of the most impressive natural attractions in the country.
