Lerwick is the capital of the Shetland Islands, which belong to Scotland, and with around 7.500 inhabitants it is the largest settlement in the archipelago. The town is located on the sheltered bay of Bressay Sound on the island of Mainland, the largest of the roughly 100 islands. Historically, Lerwick developed in the 17th century as an unofficial trading post for Dutch herring fishermen; its name derives from the Old Norse “Leirvik,” meaning “muddy bay”. Traces of its eventful past can be seen along the waterfront, with its characteristic “lodberries” warehouses built directly on the shoreline, or the 17th-century Fort Charlotte. A major highlight is the spectacular Viking fire festival Up Helly Aa, during which a replica longship is ceremonially burned. In recent years, urban art has also developed significantly. A central initiative is the LOCUS LERWICK PUBLIC ART TRAIL. The project was initiated by LIVING LERWICK in collaboration with SHETLAND ARTS. They also provide a free map and audio guide, which is included in this page, and run projects like the Mareel Arts Centre, the Bonhoga Gallery, and the Garrison Theatre. These institutions deliver an extensive year-round programme of music, dance, theatre, film, literature, visual arts and exhibitions, support artists, and nurture local creative talent through workshops and educational initiatives.
