Kirkwall is the capital of the Orkney Islands, an archipelago off the north coast of Scotland. The city has a population of around 9.000 and is located on Mainland, the largest of the approximately 70 islands. In the 11th century, Orkney was part of the Norwegian sphere of influence, and this heritage is still reflected in the townscape like the impressive St Magnus Cathedral, which was begun in 1137, built of red and yellow sandstone, and is considered the “Light of the North”. Traces of the eventful past can be found in historic buildings such as the 17th-century Earl’s Palace, the neighboring Bishop’s Palace, and the Orkney Museum, which provides insights into the Viking Age and the even older Neolithic history of the islands. The lively cultural scene is complemented by events such as the St. Magnus International Festival, which attracts music, theater, and art from around the world. Urban art is evident here in the form of creative murals by local artists that draw on Norse myths, maritime themes, and the rugged nature of Orkney. Here we have a collection photographed by graffiti hunter and streetart lover MAZZANTI. Check out her instagram channel, where she regularly presents great pictures from countries all over the world.
