CHILE: Atacama Sandboarding Adventure

In the north of Chile lies the legendary Atacama Desert with its breathtaking mountains and fascinatingly varying rock colors. From brown to yellow to red or green, you can find a whole rainbow there, especially at sunrise and sunset. We went far into the desert with our mountain bikes and snowboards strapped to our backs to find a special spot for sand boarding.

CHILE: Trail through the Atacama desert mountains

Here we have an fabulous recommendation for bicycle riders, mountainbike fans and off road tourers from the end of the world. While we traveled through Chile from north to south we had a break in San Pedro de Atacama. It´s a good spot to chill in the hot climate, as well you can do a lot of outdoor activities. Like crossing a part of the desert by mountain bike for example. There are beautiful trails which offer a relatively bleak and monochrome landscape and provide in conjunction with the sun just a stunning picture. Of course, it is not nearly desolate, the mountain formations are just blatant. But the colors change accordingly to the sunlight and the overall scenario is very overwhelming. If you should do the same with a good mountain bike, remember that the “routes” are not always real routes.

CHILE: Bore Namazu Tattoos – Arica – Visit at BORE’s studio

In Arica on the northern Pacific Coast we made a little stop to do some surfing. The beaches and the waves are quite nice for several month. Next to the harbor we passed the Tattoo-Studio of the artist BORE, who showed us the shop and gave one of our colleagues an ear-piercing-plug for free. So we thought why not write an article about the tattoo studio. In the link you will find an interview with Bore and a video of a tattoo session and his shop.

CHILE: Streetart La Serena

Another very cool surfers spot in Chile is the second biggest city in the country: La Serena. Here the Elqui-Valley is just around the corner, it´s one of the main producing areas for the Chilenian national drink Pisco. It´s a very nice drink, you can get in Germany as well, but for sure not comparable to the one you can get there at the vineyards. The city is really nice, with the historic center built in the colonial style and if you arrive from the north it is quite pleasant to arrive at this alive and green place after a lot of ghosttowns in the Atacama desert, who remind on the salpeter mining period.

CHILE: Valparaíso – Hostal Voyage

During our journey in Chile we made a stop in Valparaiso and could stay in the most interessting Hostel of the city: Hostel Voyage. It´s much nicer to stay at a friends´ place than in a hotel room. A lot of people prefer therefore couchsurfing, it´s a cheaper and as well much more personal way to travel. And at the doors of Hostel Voyage we were welcomed exactly that way. After riding the whole night in a horrible bus through half of the country and searching for over two hours for a place to stay – out of 20 hostels really nobody opened – we finally have been greeted at this nice lodge.
