Raleigh was founded in 1792 and, with a population of 467,000, is the capital of the state of North Carolina. The booming metropolis with its big city atmosphere and southern charm offers a variety of cabarets and the Martin Marietta Center for the Performing Arts is particularly worth a visit. The 10th Special Olympics World Summer Games were also held here in 1999. Of course, the city also has plenty of urban art to offer.
