GREECE: Streetart Thessaloniki – All over Urban Art in ancient architecture

After the first days in Thessaloniki I just had no idea anymore how to categorize, sort or edit the pictures later. I just had thousands of pics and the whole city is literally a huge street gallery. On every alley, on every house, on every something, even on the trees – Yes on trees! – you can find spray can doings and marker writings. Altogether it is one social art phenomenon, a way of expression and nice to observe, to document, to read and to understand how the habitants change their surrounding. If you look closer you can divide this huge house and wall painting cover which lies like a curtain over the whole city. There are areas where it is more packed, like at the university, downtown and in the center, as well you can find in between whole concept houses, high quality group artworks and of course the brilliantly made and enormous mighty murals, which cover the walls of whole 10-level apartment buildings and even higher.

GREECE: The COLORS Hotel Thessaloniki – Modern style in historic walls

While staying in Thessaloniki we spend a lot of time on going out, having delicious meals and enjoying the vibrant nightlife. During one of these evenings I met Christina Drakopoulou and asked her, if she knows any graffiti artists or recommendable places for streetart. And yes, she knew. Her place: The Colors Hotel. Actually there are three of them. The Colors Hotels are old remodeled buildings with artworks of local sprayers. Again a magic meeting, it could have been fate or it just happened by accident, but of course we made an appointment for a visit. A few days later I met Christina at the building in 13 Tzimski Street, she showed me the place and we recorded an informative interview, as well we made a little movie about the place and some of the artistic rooms.

The whole area is covered with single shops who offer regional vegetables and fruits, great spices, various types of meat and fish, and of course the famous Greek olives in numerous sorts. If you like streetart you should as well go especially on a Sunday, because then you will see what is hidden on the shop doors. They are just all covered with graffiti, tagging and paint. Some well done, some not that nice, but still it´s full of it.

GREECE: Thessaloniki – Vibrant city built on cities

It doesn´t matter when you go to Thessaloniki, maybe in winter you won´t go swimming, but this city offers just a wonderful combination of the necessary ingredients to have a desired enjoyable quality of life. I could definitely imagine living there for some month or years. The food is fantastic, the people are cool, sympathetic, social and quite open minded. But still stubborn, of course, they are Greek. But stubborn in a nice meaning. They do it their way. And what I observed I really liked, in a lot of aspects a combination of the old with the new, making something different out of it, but without forgetting anything. Everything stays preserved. In Thessaloniki I could meet interesting people who showed me new innovative ideas in which direction Greek culture can go. We went to amazing and entertaining night clubs, one located in an old Hamam, the other homagely named after the German capital Berlin with a taste of its music. And not to mention, the food is just super awesome.
