We already showed you the streetart and figurative works from Itaewon, this time it is now about the graffiti. The district is one of the city’s party neighbourhood, with countless bars, clubs, and restaurants, and there is always something going on here around the clock. Compared to the more conservative cityscape, this district looks a little different and you can clearly see the international influences of the former US military base Yongsan. Accordingly, there is also a lot of graffiti and lettering pieces here, much more than anywhere else in the city, where graffiti is rather rare. Check out the great collection!

Itaewon in the center of Seoul is considered a symbol of internationalism, openness, and cultural exchange. The district owes its special character to the closeby former US military base Yongsan, which was active until 2018. After the Korean War, the neighborhood attracted many American soldiers, diplomats, and business people, creating an unusually international environment. While other parts of Seoul remained strongly influenced by tradition, Itaewon opened up to the West early on with bars, secondhand stores, trendy cafes, and international restaurants. Accordingly, you’ll also find many urban artworks here, ranging from small to large and created by local artists as well as international visitors.

The Hongik University in Seoul is a renowned private academy, particularly known for its popular programs in art, design, and architecture. Founded in 1946, the main campus is located in the lively Hongdae district, a cultural center of the metropolis with numerous galleries, cafés, and live music venues. The Red Road in particular is a popular route where you can find numerous urban artworks. Also a lot of artists are based throughout the surrounding neighbourhood, as well there are ateliers and creative spaces. And the walls are accordingly decorated with colorful graffiti and streetart of course!

The underground shopping center at Gangnam Terminal in Seoul is also known as “Goto Mall” and is directly connected to the subway lines. There are more than 600 shops, restaurants, and boutiques located beneath the surface. Along an around 500-meter-long walkway passage, the magnificent “24 Hours Project” was created at the RAEMIAN ONE BAILEY STREETART GALLERY, in which 24 renowned Korean urban artists each created a work that deals with a specific hour of the day. Pedestrians can experience Seoul’s vibrant rhythm through creative and also amusing artworks.

On the southern bank of the Han River in the Gangnam neighborhood of Seoul, there is a very interesting and colorful pedestrian underpass called Apgujeong Graffiti Tunnel, which leads from the major streets down to the promenade along the riverside path. This walkway passage is free for graffiti and offers a legal spray space. As a result fantastic artworks are regularly sprayed here and new creations can always be found. Smaller and larger jams take place from time to time and the spot gets used for photo sessions. This Hall of Fame is also known as the “Rabbit Cave”.

The Sinchon Graffiti Tunnel is located in the Seodaemun-gu district of Seoul and is a 65-meter-long and 4.5-meter-high pedestrian tunnel between Ewha Womans University and Yonsei University. This legal spray site is also known as the “Sinchon Rabbit Hole”, which describes the passageway quite well. The graffiti hot spot is adorned with graffiti from top to bottom and new ones are constantly being added on top of the old ones. In 2016 the tunnel also became really famous when it was used as a filming location for a scene in the K-drama “Goblin – The Lonely and Great God”.
