The UFA FABRIK has been a living and working project of eco-pioneers in an old film factory since 1979. For decades, dreams were captured on celluloid on the site of the UFA-Film Kopierwerke in the south of Berlin. In 1979, shortly before the planned demolition of the buildings, „The second life of ufa“ began in the International Cultural Center ufaFabrik Berlin, a living and working project that is still unique in Europe today. On the 18,566 square meter site, around 30 residents and over 200 employees work tirelessly to combine different areas of society such as living, working, cultural events, creativity and social life in a meaningful way. New and unusual ideas have since been implemented, such as ecological pilot projects and energy-efficient building refurbishment, innovative, participative cultural concepts and social networks for families and neighborhoods for people of all ages. – ufa Fabrik
There are several associations, initiatives and businesses on the site that work together on the vision of an open, tolerant and diverse life together in a networked, sustainable and creative way. These include the International Cultural Centre with festivals, comedy, variety, dance, world music, children’s activities, theater and a lot more, check out their program. In addition, the garden café and restaurant Rudi & Rosa, the guest house, the samba band Terra Brasilis, rehearsal studios as training rooms for professional and recreational artists with regular workshops for dance, sport and music, the children’s circus school for young talents, the NUSZ neighborhood center for support in social, health and family issues, the organic bakery, the children’s farm, the living community and other sustainable projects from green roofs to decentralized energy supply. There are also some urban works of art on the grounds, such as a large graphic design on the main building and small filigree drawings on the adjacent buildings.
