GERMANY: Streetart Berlin – Schöneberg – Natur Park Südgelände – Priesterweg Gallery

The park area “Südgelände” (=”South Area”) has been managed by GrünBerlin for around 20 years. The place functioned as a locomotive and shunting station about 200 years ago, and much on the site still reminds of that time. There are many rails overgrown by bushes and trees, old sheds and engine halls that have been restored and function as cultural sites, restaurants or art workshops now. There are disused wall lines where trains went through or over them back then. The park operator has approved the location on the railway line as a spray point. Conditions include that no spray cans should be left lying around. On the two spots at the North Wall and the South Wall it is forbidden to make new artworks, at this spot here on the railway line it is allowed.

The unique character of the nature park is created by the contrast between the relics from the eventful railway history of the city of Berlin, the wild nature and works of contemporary sculpture. The 18 hectare park was realized with compensation and substitute funds from Deutsche Bahn AG and with generous support from the Allianz Umweltstiftung and was a “global project” of EXPO 2000. Most of the part is under landscape and nature protection. In the park there are two handicapped accessible circular routes of 1 km and 2.7 km in length. In the summer months, the café in the bridge maintenance facility is open on weekends.
