AZERBAIJAN: Streetart Baku – Urban Art in the capital and economic center

Baku is the capital and economic center of Azerbaijan. The city on the Caspian Sea is famous for its medieval fortified old town, the palace of the Shirvanshahs with an extensive royal building complex and the stone Maiden’s Tower as some of the city’s landmarks. Famous modern buildings include the Heydar Aliyev Center designed by architect Zaha Hadid and the three pointed skyscrapers entitled “Flame Towers”. Of course interesting urban artworks can also be found throughout the streets.

SINGAPORE: Streetart Singapore – Urban Art Collection from the Island State

Singapore is an island and city-state south of Malaysia. Small but golden. It is a global financial center with a tropical climate and a multicultural population. In the colonial center of the city you can find the Pandang, which has been used as a cricket ground since the 1830s and is now surrounded by glorious buildings such as the town hall with its 18 Corinthian columns. In the Chinese quarter Chinatown from around the 1820s is the red and gold Buddha Tooth Relic Temple, in which a tooth of Buddha is said to be. And in the streets there is as well wonderful urban art!

When you look on the fantastic paintings of SKULL ART TAKA you have to think of Alien, Giger and dark apocalyptic worlds. Of monsters that don’t scare you in the end, because they look so damn fascinating. The artist, also called TAKANORI is a master of this design, a visual genius for creatures and he is especially into the skulls. There are numerous other types of themes in the artworks, but the main topic was and is always the skull.

KAZAKHSTAN: Streetart Map Almaty – Graffiti and Urban Art in the Trans-Ili Alatau mountains

Almaty is the largest metropolis in Kazakhstan and is located in the foothills of the Trans-Ili Alatau mountain. It was the country’s capital until 1997 and has continued to be Kazakhstan’s commercial and cultural center. Landmarks include the Central State Museum with historical Kazakh artifacts, Panfilov Park in the center and the Tsarist-era Zenkov Cathedral. Of course, there is also beautiful urban art in the streets, from large murals and graffiti to small colorful gimmicks. Check out the collection by great photographer and art enthusiast Mike Hennessey aka See Some Streetart. With more than 200 photos we had enough to start a map. JAPAN: Shinichi Yoshitomi´s nostalgic Movie-Adventure-Shop – Mangas, Animies and Superheroes

Comic fans and manga connoisseurs will surely understand the next one. In Okoyama we were amazed with the greatest anime in its original form, scripts in Japanese, and a wealth of unique footage and impassioned smorgasbord. By chance we found the store „Movie Adventure Shop“ by SHINICHI YOSHITOMI in a side street. Especially the original soundtrack of Battleship Yamato immediately got us hooked and we discovered a small gold mine with collectors‘ treasures from 40 years of film and comic history.

LAOS: Majestic Buddha Park – Xieng Khuan

After leaving Vientiane on our way to the 4000 Islands in the South of Laos we passed a monumental and historic treasure site you shouldn´t miss if you are around. The local name is Xieng Khuan, but the English words for this area make it self-explanatory for what it’s about. The Buddha Park is a park filled up with over 200 Hindu and Buddhist statues. There are several Buddhas spread across the square, as well scenes from ancient legends and numerous gods and goddesses.

In fact, when discovering a country, you should of course immerse yourself in the local cuisine and homemade specialities and explore the unknown flavours. But we had been travelling in Asia for a while and hadn’t eaten real good bread for a long time. You rarely find this around, let alone a real pizza. It was all the more surprising to suddenly come across a cosy pizza bungalow on the beach at the farthest tip of the paradisiacal island of Koh Rong, where one of the most delicious Italian-style pizzas imaginable was baked.

JAPAN: Nara – UNESCO Historic Monuments of the Ancient

Many of the temples, shrines and ruins in Nara form the “Historic Monuments of Ancient Nara”, which is announced as a UNESCO World Heritage Site. The complex includes the Tōdai-ji, the Kōfuku-ji, the Kasuga taisha, the Gangō-ji, the Yakushi-ji, the Tōshōdai-ji, and the Heijō Palace. The nearby Kasugayama Primeval Forest is also identified as part of the world heritage site and worth a visit.

CAMBODIA: JJ’s Playground – Beach Rave in Sihanoukville

Between the cultural treasures in the Cambodian inner country and the heaps of paradiseful islands by the sea there is Sihanoukville located on the Southern Coast of the Thailand Gulf. It´s headquarters for planing and starting a wonderful relaxing time on one island or do a hopping over several ones. Depening on the time you have, but for sure, you don´t want to leave. For the party people there is as well a cool nightlife provided including super nice sea side places with DJs and nightlong dancing on the beach till sunrise. One of those places with good cocktails, fine music and awesome partys is JJ’s Playground. We spoke with manager Jose and team members Justin and Dave in an interview about the place and the party at JJ’s, as well we did a short walkaround video during daylight.
