The Pfungst Family: Julius, Marie, Arthur and Rosette
Julius Pfungst founded the Naxos Union in 1871 on today’s Wittelsbacherallee, which, in addition to selling emery, soon also manufactured grinding machines and distributed them throughout Europe. After 1899, his son Arthur successfully took over the management of the company until his unexpectedly early death in 1912. In 1918, Arthur’s mother Rosette and sister Marie set up a foundation in his name to spread education among all classes and transferred the Naxos Union to it. Marie Pfungst managed it as a board member, developed a popular education program and was responsible for all the decisions. As early as 1935, Marie was forced to give up her position on the board of the foundation because she was Jewish. In September 1942, she and many other Frankfurt Jews were deported to the Theresienstadt concentration camp, where she died in February 1943. Today, the foundation is located at Waldschmidt Street 39. It awards scholarships to needy students and runs the Marie Pfungst Home in Bad Homburg.
