GERMANY: Streetart Frankfurt – Character Jam 2024 – Event and Artist Gallery

From June 7th to 9th in 2024, the great CHARACTER JAM took place again at the JUGENDHAUS AM BÜGEL, this time it was the 12th edition of this fantastic event, where several artists redesign and color up the building complex and surrounding facades. This year there were not as many walls as usual, which also has to do with the difficult financial situation of the facility. In the months leading up to the event, there had been repeated protest actions together with other social institutions involved in youth work, all of which were suffering from cutbacks and insufficient budgets. This is why the artworks at this jam were also themed around this issue.

The youth center about the event: „Dear artists, we cordially invite you to this year’s Character Jam from 7th June to 9th June! On Fridays there will be a workshop for young people and the weekend belongs to you professionals. But as we prepare for the event, we have to realize that a lot has changed since the last decade. Since 2016, our subsidies from the city have not been increased, while costs have risen continuously. Despite our regular campaigns since 2018 to draw attention to our financial situation, we have yet to see any success.

The situation is critical this year – if the funding doesn’t change, we won’t be able to survive the next two years. That’s why we’re becoming more political this year and want to give the Character Jam a theme. We don’t have an exact name yet, but it will be about the financial situation and what happens when places like ours disappear. We know that you are all extremely creative people and we hope you will support us by putting artwork on our walls on this topic. Despite our political message, we would like to emphasize that we continue to seek dialogue with politicians. We therefore ask you to implement the motto in a creative and non-agitational way.

One idea we have is to ask our young people and former visitors what the Jugendhaus and Mädchentreff am Bügel mean to them and what they associate with our facility. We will send you their statements in advance so that you can incorporate them into your artwork. This way, our walls can show what a valuable place we are and what will be lost if we have to close. We have always been a colorful place and a home for graffiti culture. When I’m asked to describe our facilities, I always say, ‚We’re colorful inside and from the outside‘ and we all live that here.
