GERMANY: Streetart Berlin – Wannsee – Pfaueninsel – Voliere & Peacock Breeding – MARTIN FRIEDRICH RABE

Voliere  –  Aviary

The aviary on Peacock Island, which was loosely based on English models, was built 1824 from designs by MARTIN FRIEDRICH RABE (1775-1856), an architect known for his work on palaces. The building originally housed local and exotic birds, including white peacocks, Eurasian spoonbills and larks. Like numerous other animal enclosures, the aviary was part of a menagerie that had been laid out at the Frederick William III, and was integrated into the design of the landscape.

Frederick William IV gave the extensive collection of animals – that included monkeys, kangaroos, lions and bears – to the Berlin zoo, which was founded in 1842. A testament to the former menagerie, the aviary is the most unchanged component to have survived on Peacock Island. The Stiftung Preußische Schlösser und Gärten Berlin- Brandenburg (SPSG) was able to restore the aviary from 2009-11. At present, the building is exclusively used to keep various types of fowl and pheasants. These include blue and white peacocks, Vorwerk chickens, Silkies, Brahma chickens and Golden Pheasants.

Pfauenzucht  –  Peacock Breeding

The Blue Peacock (Pavo cristatus) we find on the island is a gallinaceous bird of the pheasant family. Its native home is the savannahs in India, South Asia and Indonesia. For the adornment of their gardens the Romans. already bred peafowl on islands. This was to prevent the valuable animals from being stolen, or from getting away. In 1795 the first peacocks were brought from the Sacrow Estate farm to the island, which has borne their name ever since. They formed the basis of the menagerie that existed there until 1842. The birds have remained, however, as a symbol of exoticism on the island.

Mating seasons begins for peacocks in January, continuing until April. The peacocks spread their plumage in order to attract the peahens. From April to mid-June the hens lay eight to ten eggs in each nest. After 30 days of brooding, the peachicks are hatched. At first, the mother feeds them kernels and worms. On Peacock Island the peachicks remain a year in the habitats to protect them from foxes. Each year six to eight birds are raised. Only after three years are they sexually mature, at which time the peacocks begin to develop their typical tail plumage. One peacock and five peahens are kept year-round in the peafowl breeding habitat. The number of birds freely roaming the Island remains stable at about 30.

Besides the aviary, the winter quarters for exotic birds, built by Albert Dietrich Schadow in 1828, is the only menagerie building on the island that has been preserved from the time around 1825/30, looking much as it did originally from the outside, with the exception of the shutters on the windows, which were added later. The rural manner of building was in keeping with specifications determined by King Frederick William III.

White Peafowl  –  Pavo Cristatus Mutation Alba

Outdoor enclosure for the protection of peacocks, built with funds from the Cornelsen Cultural Foundation on 9 January 2003. The White Peafowl is a mutation of the Indian Peafowl. However, it is not an albino, since its iris is not colored red. The white coloring caused by a gene defect of reduced pigmentation (Leucism). White peacocks were very popular among the Indian maharajahs and have been bred for centuries. They do not occur in the wild.

Pfauenpatenschaft  –  Adopt a Peacock

Please help us to take care of the 55 Peacocks on the Island. Adopt a peacock for the current season with a donation of 200 euros. The first peacocks arrived on the island in 1795. The birds formed the basis for the menagerie that existed until 1842 and later remained on the island as a symbol of exoticism. Since 2003, the peacock population has been safeguarded by a newly created peacock breeding enclosure. You will receive a certificate as a gift or as a personal memento. You can get all information via spsg.de/unterstuetzen-foerdern/patenschaften.
