GERMANY: Streetart Berlin – Wannsee – Pfaueninsel – Schloss Pfaueninsel – VIDEO.SCKRE

Schloss Pfaueninsel  –  Peacock Island House  –  Front Artwork

The artist duo VIDEO.SCKRE about their artwork: After an intensive research and preparation phase, we were able to start designing the archway at Pfaueninsel Castle at the end of April 2025. After our design won the competition last year, we were all the more excited about the final design. Like the previous designs, the archway was to offer a view into a fictional landscape. We were particularly inspired by Karl Blechen’s “Forest Landscape in Spandau.” Our idea was for the viewer to look out from a late summer forest onto a clearing. The central axis of view is the island’s former palm house and a feeding shelter, which also no longer exists. While peacocks inhabit the island today, there used to be other species as well, including cranes. The pair of cranes serves as an introductory element to the landscape for the viewer. In order to achieve the most homogeneous coloration and long-lasting UV resistance possible, we opted for mineral paints from Keim. Painting on Peacock Island was a valuable and very special experience for us. The atmosphere of the island, its animal inhabitants, and the changing light conditions have left a lasting impression on us and our mural painting.  –  VIDEO.SCKRE

The Castle

The House on Peacock Island was built between 1794 and 1795 as a folly for King Frederick William II of Prussia (1744-1797) by Johann Gottlieb Brendel, master carpenter from Potsdam. The King’s mistress, Wilhelmine Enke (1752-1820, Countess of Lichtenau from 1796) played an active role in its design. His son, Frederick William III (1770-1840) together with his wife, Queen Luise (1776-1810) used the house as a summer retreat for the royal family. The veneration of the Queen after her early death helped to protect its neo-classical interiors. In their almost untouched state of preservation they are unique within the gardens and palaces of Berlin and Brandenburg.

As part of the ‚Sonderinvestitionsprogramm 2‘ the House on Peacock Island can now be restored for the Prussian Palaces and Gardens. Foundation. The project includes the repair and partial replacement of the planks on the half-timbered façade and of the roof cladding. and the repair of the load-bearing structure. The surfaces in the historic interiors will be conserved and restored. The German Federal Government and the States of Brandenburg and Berlin have launched this exceptional investment program in order to preserve important historic monuments in the palaces and gardens of Potsdam and Berlin. The planning start was in spring 2019 and the start of construction in spring 2021.
