Meierei  –  Diary

The Meierei on Peacock Island is a dairy built between 1794 and 1795 on the orders of Frederick William II in the form of a ruined Gothic monastery. It was built at about the same time as Peacock Island Palace and served to provide for the island’s residents and visitors. On the upper floor is the so-called Gothic Hall, decorated by the theater painter BARTOLOMEO VERONA based on designs by MICHAEL PHILIPP BOUMANN. The stucco work was executed by CONSTANTIN PHILIPP GEORG SARTORI the Younger.

Wasserbüffel  –  Water Bufalloes

For some years now, during May and October, water buffalo have been grazing in several wet meadows around the Dairy on Peacock Island. Compared with the alternative of mowing the pastures with heavy machines, buffaloes are an environmentally friendly choice, as their wide hooves and flexible fetlocks are perfectly adapted to life in are Swampy and muddy soil. Their relatively light eco-footprint and grazing habits thus aid the we conservation of the meadows.

The presence of water buffalo in the area dates back to 1801 when two were presented as a birthday gift to King Frederick William III. The buffalo pond and adjoining stable were built near the Dairy in 1802. Since the menagerie was closed down in 1842, buffaloes have been living on Peacock Island.

There are two species of buffalo in nature – the African and the highly endangered Asian buffalo, which is rarely found in the wild. The Asian buffalo (lat. Bubalus amee) was domesticated in India some 6000 years ago. They are very hardy animals – robust and resistant to disease- weighing about 500 kg on average. They have a tame nature which means they get on well with with humans. The farm estate Dar? is the owner of the water buffaloes on Peackock Island.
