Fregattenschuppen – The Frigate Boathouse
Some royal gifts tend to be a bit bigger. In 1814, for example, to commemorate the victory over Napoleon Bonaparte, the British Prince Regent, who would later become King George IV, presented a sailing yacht to his ally, the Prussian King Frederick William III. But because over the years the ship had fallen into disrepair, the British Royal Family commissioned the building of a new one in 1831. Christened under the name „Royal Louise“ In memory of Queen Luise of Prussia, the keel of the miniature frigate was laid down in Woolwich, near London, and arrived i Berlin in 1832.

Such a prestigious, three-masted frigate reconstruction on a smaller scale of 1:3 was in need of suitable winter quarters. For this purpose, a boathouse was built at the south bank of Peacock Island according to designs by the court building supervisor ALBERT DIETRICH SCHADOW. The „Royal Louise“ was already able to move i during the winter season 1832/33. This hall building is a wood-boarded, half-timbered construction with a high, thatched, trussed roof that rises above the brickwork of the harbor basin. Particularly striking is the gable facing the water to the southwest, with its large entry gate framed with elaborate carving.

Whereas the Frigate Boathouse has been well-preserved, the „Royal Louise“ suffered changes of fate before she was ultimately scrapped in Kiel after the end of World War II. Despite this fact, the Frigate Boathouse once again today serves its original purpose – namely, as the winter quarters for the replica of the „Royal Louise“, which entered service in 1999 and has come under the auspices of the Royal Louise Yacht-und Schifffahrtsverein zu Potsdam, registered association, since 2004.

Royal Louise – The Royal Frigate
The royal yacht ROYAL LOUISE is once again cruising off Potsdam on the Jungfernsee. Dedicated citizens brought back Potsdam’s floating landmark, which once adorned paintings and postcards, in 2004. A gift from the British King William IV to Frederick William III, the ROYAL LOUISE came to Prussia in 1832 and served as a royal pleasure yacht. The scaled-down full-rigged ship was modeled after British frigates of the early 19th century. Until 1914, the ROYAL LOUISE cruised the waters of Potsdam, first as a royal yacht and later as an imperial yacht.

From 1921 to 1926, it served as a youth ship for the Seglerhaus am Wannsee club. It was then erected in Kiel as a memorial to the Nazis, and was finally scrapped in 1947. The new ROYAL LOUISE was built between 1996 and 2000 as part of an employment promotion project in Berlin-Köpenick. The ship’s summer home is now once again the VSaW (Federal Shipbuilding and Watersports Association) on Wannsee, while its winter quarters are in the frigate shed on Pfaueninsel, built for the old ROYAL LOUISE in 1832.

The yacht sails on the Lower Havel River between Berlin and Potsdam. The non-profit organization ROYAL LOUISE Yacht and Shipping Association maintains and operates the ship through volunteer work. It uses it as a landmark, as a training ship for meetings, and to promote sailing. The ROYAL LOUISE is also available for special events. Hikers, sailing enthusiasts, guests, and members are warmly welcome.
