Hello my name is
Several weeks ago I’ve created a mural and revisited a powerful symbol of graffiti culture: the ‘Hello my name is’ sticker. Originated in the 60s in the United States this little sticker popularised by Avery Dennison was used as an identification label in professional environments: restaurants, shops, conferences.
The simple, straightforward design of these labels was then taken up by graffiti artists in the 80s, particularly in New York to turn them into a tool for self-expression: a miniature, nomadic medium for tagging anywhere, quickly, without being noticed – a gesture that was both discreet and deeply protesting.
For this piece, I digitally redrew the sticker with folded effects, recreating the classic ‘Hello my name is’, then applied ‘Seboh’ like a tag with a black marker. On top I painted a portrait of a woman in my favourite blue/purple colours, creating a harmonious contrast between the chosen colours.
