Memorial Mural for Omar and his dog Megatatze

OMAR represents the many homeless people who die in Berlin, mostly alone and nameless. After 30 years on the streets, he lost his life at Arnimplatz in Prenzlauer Berg in sub-zero temperatures. OMAR, who often roamed the streets singing loudly and idiosyncratically with his handcart and his dog, left behind traces and stories. When asked what he would wish for, he replied, “I wish for world peace.”. He was born on 27th July 1976 and died on 31st October 2019.

The mural is based on a photograph by DEBORA RUPPERT from her social documentary series “Kein Raum – Begegnungen mit Menschen ohne Obdach”, which means in English „No Room – Encounters with homeless people“. Using this photograph as a basis, urban contemporary artist AKUT developed the artistic mural, which was realized in collaboration with the Central Counseling Center for People in Need of Housing. The counseling center in the building is the first point of contact for anyone seeking information and support regarding their precarious housing situation. The artwork aims to draw attention to people who are on the margins of society and are often overlooked. It highlights the difficult situation of homeless people and makes their dignity visible.

The project was supperted by Bishop Dr. Christian Stäblein, Frank Zander Foundation, Diakonie Berlin Brandenburg, Berliner Stadtmission, EKBO Evangelisch im Osten, Evangelischer Kirchenkreis Mitte, Tagesspiegel, PSD Bank, Modelabel Mey and member of the parliament Elke Breitenbach.

Deutsch: Berlin ist kalt und regnerisch, ein Tag, der für dich scheußlich ist. Die Nacht wird hart und endlos sein, mit deinen Hunden und allein. Du nimmst es hin, du trinkst dich fort, der Träume Welten, schöner Ort. Ein Bierchen noch dann gehts dir gut, wenn du auf harter Platte ruhst. Auf engem Raum, kannst du nicht leben, bist nur gereist dein ganzes Leben. Du braucht die Freiheit und das Nichts, fühlst dich so leicht und wirklich reich, kommst an und gehst und ziehst dann weiter, ein Lächeln stehts, die Flasche hoch, du strahlst uns an, trotz aller Not. Auch wenn du trinkst, was schädlich ist, bist du doch immer Optimist. Du sammelst Flaschen, um zu leben, und bist bereit noch abzugeben. Nimmst dankbar jede Spende an, klagst und jammerst nie, ein ganzer Mann. Betreutes Wohnen kommt zu spät. Für dich, der ohne Anker lebt. Die Welt ist hart und ungerecht, doch du Omar, bist immer echt. Heut gingst du fort, schnell wie der Wind, Berlin verlor ein Szene-Kind, ein Kind der Szene ist nicht mehr, entschwebt, verweht, sein Platz bleibt leer. Doch deine Hunde nicht allein, sie werden auf der Wuhle sein, damit du glücklich reisen kannst, im Land der Träume, schönste Orte, für Lebende ist zu die Pforte. Sind in Gedanken nah bei dir, bist nicht vergessen, nicht begraben, wir vieles zum erinnern haben, bei Lagerfeuer hellem Schein, wirst du stehts mit, und bei uns sein.

English: Berlin is cold and rainy, a day that is awful for you. The night will be hard and endless, with your dogs and alone. You accept it, you drink yourself away, the world of dreams, a beautiful place. One more beer and you’ll be fine when you rest on the hard slab. You can’t live in a small space, you’ve only traveled your whole life. You need freedom and nothingness, you feel so light and truly rich, you arrive and leave and then move on, always smiling, bottle raised, you beam at us, despite all the hardship. Even when you drink, which is harmful, you are always an optimist. You collect bottles to live and are willing to give them away. You gratefully accept every donation, never complain or whine, a real man. Assisted living comes too late. For you, who lives without an anchor. The world is hard and unfair, but you, Omar, are always genuine. Today you left, fast as the wind, Berlin lost a child of the scene, a child of the scene is no more, floated away, blown away, his place remains empty. But your dogs are not alone, they will be on the Wuhle so that you can travel happily in the land of dreams, the most beautiful places, for the living the gate is too. We are close to you in our thoughts, you are not forgotten, not buried, we have much to remember, by the bright light of the campfire, you will always be with us.
