GERMANY: Streetart Berlin – Charlottenburg – Danckelmann 16 – CONNI WILD, INGRID VON DEN DRIESCH & UTE MAAK

40 Years BLOCKINITIATIVE 128  –  ZIEGENHOF e.V.

The mural, which was painted on the entire façade of Remise Danckelmannstraße 15 in 1984, tells the story of the beginning of the “Ziegenhof”: Committed neighbors and the first plants break through the official urban renewal plans for the block of houses, and they create a self-designed open space for themselves and the neighborhood.

According to the original construction plan, which is presented in the picture by two money-driven politicians, all the rear buildings and side wings within the block of houses 128 were to be demolished. The many very low-rent old apartments were to be replaced by two lucrative new blocks. The legally convicted construction mafioso Wolfgang Antes (pictured with moustache) was also involved in these plans.

The neighborhood initiative, which led to the founding of the Blockinitiative association, helped to prevent these profit plans, began planting the already cleared building site on its own initiative and over the years created a public space for all residents of the neighborhood.

The mural was designed by INGRID VON DEN DRIESCH and in 1984 she painted it on the wall together with CONNI WILD and UTE MAAK. Unfortunately, the mural had to be plastered over due to the necessary renovation of the façade and has now in 2024 been installed as a copy at its original location on the occasion of the association’s 40th anniversary. Gratulation to “40 years of Block Initiative 128 – Ziegenhof e.V..

In 1982, committed neighbors came together to form the Blockinitiative 128 e.V. association, which campaigned against the planned destruction of the old building fabric and the eviction of the long-established tenants. Over four decades, the members of the association and committed neighbors have turned the former demolition site into a public park according to their own ideas. The association has been working on a fully voluntary basis for 40 years, planting and caring for the “Ziegenhof” and looking after the animals. Information on the history of the farm can be found in the booklet “Kiez-Geschichten Heft 13: Von der Freifläche zum Ziegenhof”, available from the Godolt bookshop opposite the entrance to the goat farm.
