In Memory of Joseph Schmidt

The music school was named after the Austrian opera singer Joseph Schmidt and there is also a permanent exhibition on the life and work of the artist. He lived from March 4th 1904 and died on November 16th 1942 in the Girenbad internment camp in Switzerland. Around 1930, he was one of the best-known and most popular German-speaking singers. After he had to flee the German Reich as a Jew in 1933, he arrived in Switzerland via detours, where he soon fell ill in an internment camp and died of heart failure due to inadequate treatment in a Zurich hospital. The mural was created by the brass band PFFFT.
