In Memory of the Warsaw Uprising
The mural is the result of work by young people under the direction of Polish artist MARIA MICHOŃ and with the support of artist colleague DARIUSZ PACZKOWSKI aka 3FALA. This unusual project is part of the town partnership between the Warsaw district of Mokotów and the Berlin district of Treptow-Köpenick and was realized by the German-Polish Society. It was inaugurated on July 9th in 2024 to commemorate the Warsaw Uprising 80 years ago.
In the Warsaw Uprising from August to October 1944, the Polish resistance movement rose up against the German occupiers. The brutal suppression claimed immeasurable victims among the fighters and the civilian population. This mural commemorates this and is part of a German-Polish youth project as part of the city partnership between Berlin and Warsaw and the partnership between the Berlin district of Treptow-Köpenick and Warsaw-Mokotów. The central element in this artwork is the armbands of the insurgents. Behind each armband is the story of a person. From inside the letters, the eyes of the insurgents look directly at us and confront us with their feelings. Berlin, July 2024.
