Since 1970, the autonomous social center FLAFLA in Herford has been a home for people who think differently. For everyone who prefers to create something themselves rather than just consume. For people who want to party – and ask questions at the same time. Why do parties often look the same? Why does money have more influence than people in so many venues? Why does subculture so often remain invisible? At FLAFLA, things are different.
Here, they organize parties, concerts, benefit kitchens, readings, and discussions together – without bosses, without profit. Everything is decided by the members themselves, and everyone can participate! If you have ideas, make music, DJ, want to offer an awareness workshop, or simply want to get involved – then you are very welcome. Here, it doesn’t matter what you look like, how much you earn, or where you come from. What matters is what you bring to the table and how you interact with others. Racism, sexism, antisemitism, queerphobia, or any other discriminatory bullshit has no place here. They actively work to be a place where everyone can feel safe and comfortable.
FLAFLA is more than just a venue. It’s a social center, a space for self-organization and mutual support. A place where people come together, empower each other, and wage political battles together – against exclusion, for solidarity, against capitalist injustices, for a good life for all. We’re not neutral; we get involved – in the city, in the neighborhood, in everyday life. But that doesn’t mean we just spout theory. On the contrary: we dance, laugh, argue, cook, sweat, rehearse, build, and organize – all homemade, all grassroots. – FlaFla
In 2017, the center moved and is now located in two buildings at Diebrocker Straße 2 and 4. Many artists participated in the move, giving the new facade a colorful and expressive makeover with numerous small works that combined to create a large mural collage covering the entire building. Among those involved were HERBIRD, ANGRY KOALA, JOHNIVERSUM, DRADRA, KING #FF_ART, the RAINBROGROUP, HAKKEPETA and SPÄM from the STREET ART SCHOOL, as well MARLA, JDPK, MESY, DOPE and EMPTY.
