Under the motto “You decide, it’s your life”, the legendary CHARACTER JAM graffiti event took place for the 11th time on June 24th and 25th 2023 at the JUGENDHAUS AM BÜGEL, where the areas on and around the facility at Ben-Gurion-Ring 35-37 are redesigned every year by well known local artists together with the kids.
Frankfurt creative JUSTUS BECKER aka COR, began painting the 200-metre-long wall around the property already on June 20th to get everything finished. In terms of the motifs, the young people were asked in advance who their personal heroes and idols were and what ideas they had for the new decoration. This allowed the young people to actively contribute their suggestions for the design of their environment and help develop their surroundings.
Further workshops took place on 22 and 23 June and the artists JASMIN SIDDIQUI, internationally famous and better known as HERA, and her colleague MARIJA SILVIJA AMBRAZEVICIUTE alias fabulous EMESA created concepts with the children and young people and then implemented them together directly on the façades. At the weekend, on June 24th and 25th, things got really colorful and a large number of artists from Frankfurt and the region created awesome works around the building walls. Visitors were able to watch them paint live and also get creative themselves.
Those jams have been taking place at the JUGENDHAUS AM BÜGEL since the 90s and the youth center is one of the oldest and most important places in Frankfurt for graffiti, break dance and hip hop. Teaching urban art is also part of the youth social work agenda there. Many artists who spent time at the youth center as teenagers themselves now run workshops for the new young people, showing them how it’s done and passing on their knowledge. “When we asked HERA whether she would take part this year, she immediately said that she didn’t just want to paint a mural, but also teach the young people something about urban art,” told us youth center manager SVENJA KLEMEN. According to the motto “Each one, teach one”, everyone with experience shares the knowledge with the new generation and the youngsters come in with new ideas and innovation.
