In the middle of Frankfurt’s Roßmarkt near the Hauptwache stands the Gutenberg monument in honor of the inventor of letterpress printing with movable metal letters. His real name was Johannes Gensfleisch, but he was called Gutenberg and thus went down in history. He was born in Mainz around 1400 and died on February 26th in 1468, also in Mainz. The terracotta memorandum was made by the sculptor EDUARD SCHMIDT VON DER LAUNITZ and was inaugurated on June 24th in 1840 to mark the 400th anniversary of the invention of this innovative art of printing. The monument, which has since become a Frankfurt landmark, is not only an imposing commemorative statue, it is also a fountain. Several figures, emblems and animal heads are built into the pedestal monument, but on top are two other important people besides Gutenberg. These represent the printers and publishers Johannes Fust and Peter Schöffer who worked with him in Frankfurt. A great respect and also a tribute from our side to Gutenberg! For without him, book printing would not have existed as it did, he set many stones in motion. And without printing there would have been no books, without books there would have been no dissemination of knowledge, without knowledge there would have been no progress, without progress there would have been no Internet, without the Internet there would have been no websites, and without websites there would have been no Vagabundler project. So thank you Gutenberg!
