The Europaturm is a telecommunications tower and at 337.5 meters high, it is the fourth tallest building in Germany after the Berliner Fernsehturm (television tower with 368 meters), the Marinefunksendestelle Rhauderfehn (naval transmitter station with 352,8 meters) and the Sender Höhbeck (transmitter with 344 meters). The tower is usually illuminated in different colors, sometimes also to match current events. It is a popular landmark of the city and is called “Ginnheimer Spargel” by the locals, which means “Asparagus of Ginnheim” in English. The tower was planned by the architect Johannes Möhrle with the collaboration of Peter Metzger and Erwin Heinle. Construction work began in 1974 and broadcasting operations started in 1979.
