YAAM – Young African Art Market
The YAAM or Young African Art Market was founded in 1994 and is run by the non profit organization “KULT – Verein für Jugendkultur e.V.”. The focus is on the Afro-Caribbean culture. The multicultural backgrounds of the contributors and friends are reflected in the music, sports program and food stalls as well as the art and atmosphere of the premises. It is a social place where the most diverse people have the opportunity to meet, express themselves artistically, work and celebrate together. Around the whole place you can find awesome works of urban art. Here is a collection of the great creations sorted by artists.
With its open and diverse approach, YAAM aims to help provide cultural access and new perspectives in addition to learning and nurturing a tolerant, peaceful and respectful relationship with and within the community. Specifically, this means: (1) Social project work: Infopoint for refugees and supporter / language lessons / High Five / inclusive DJ collective I children’s festivals. (2) Sports and leisure activities: Kidscorner / football / basketball / table tennis / indoor skating / drumming / fire danc. (3) Arts and cultural events: Music events focused on Reggae. Afro, Hiphop, World / solo events / graffiti workshops / gallery / Berlin crafts marke. (4) Food market: Afro-Caribbean food stall.
YAAM is self-organized and independent. From its inception, they have been working without public structural support. The aforementioned events and programs are largely made possible through the generostiy of vounteer work and donations. YAAM has endured many challenges over the last years. This inludes five location changes carried out by the hardwork and efforts of many helping hands. Though there is the ongoing threat of displacement, the art space has been fortunate to make its home at Schillingbnicke 3, next to the Berlin Ostbahnhof, since 2014.
YAAM is in a constant balancing act between free space and commerce, economic coercion and official pressure. In response, they continue to offer solidarity, diversity and the ideals of people who enliven it and ultimately improve the quality of life. Once again YAAM is facing great pressure to withstand the general developments of the capital. Structural and safety requirements, permits and much more must be financed independently. Through your solidarity and help, YAAM continues to live on.
Social worker ORTWIN RAU, affectionately known as PAPA YAAM, was of the co-founders and a major force until his death on June 7th in 2018. He was wholeheartedly committed to the needs of YAAM and its people. His love of reggae music, street art and basketball, as well as his dedication to youth from all over the world, have shaped this place. He was able to inspire people to fight together (or this little piece of home. YAAM, its friends, visitors and staff carry on this spirit! Your donation contributes this small Berlin-Afro-Caribbean oasis so we can continue to swim a little against the current.. the capitalist zeitgeist. In times of racist agitation and exclusion.
