In Memory of PETER KOEHNE
The large-scale artwork was originally created by the artist PETER KOEHNE, who created the mural in 1980 at the instigation of the then district mayor Herbert Grigers. PETER KOEHNE lived from 1917 to 1984. The magnificent work of art was restored in 1989 by OSKAR GONSCHORR with financial support from the property owner Herta Hohensee, the Sparkasse der Stadt Berlin West and the Senate Department for Building and Housing.
OSKAR GONSCHORR was born in Hohenstein in East Prussia in 1933. After an apprenticeship as a decorative painter, he received a scholarship to study mural painting at the Folkwang School in Essen from 1954 to 1957, followed by a further scholarship from 1959 to 1964 for ten semesters of study at the Hochschule für Bildende Kunst in Berlin and a two-year stint as stage manager at the Hansa Theater in Berlin. Since then GONSCHORR has worked as a freelance artist in Berlin and is known for his technical realism. In 1970 he was a founding member of the group HAPP and in the same year also a founding member of the “Freie Berliner Kunstausstellung”. In the 70s and 80s, he created many facade paintings in Berlin. – Vita Gonschorr
