The Anhalter Hochbunker was constructed between 1941 and 1942 as part of the Nazi regime’s air raid protection program. The project was commissioned by the German Reich under the direction of Albert Speer. The bunker is a massive reinforced concrete structure with walls and ceilings up to 3.5 meters thick. It has seven above-ground floors and was designed to accommodate approximately 3.000 to 3.500 people, though in practice it was often used by over 10.000 people at a time. During the Allied air raids in World War II, it served as a shelter for the civilian population around Anhalter Bahnhof. The bunker was not destroyed and remained largely intact after the war ended. After 1945, various institutions used it, including for storage purposes. Since the 1990s, it has gradually been repurposed for cultural and museum use. Since 2014, it has housed the Berlin Story Bunker Museum. Historical exhibitions, including those on National Socialism, World War II, and German postwar history, are displayed across approximately 6.500 m² of exhibition space and several floors. The bunker thus serves as a place of learning and remembrance with permanent and special exhibitions, audio guides, and around 30 exhibition stations. Additionally, the building houses a bookstore operated by the affiliated publishing house.
