GERMANY: Streetart Map Hildesheim – Urban Art Archive and Graffiti Tracker

Hildesheim is a city in the state of Lower Saxony with a population of around 106.000. Its origins date back to the year 815, when it was founded as a bishopric. Today, Hildesheim is particularly known for its historic old town and its significant churches, including the cathedral and St. Michael’s Church, both of which are UNESCO World Heritage Sites. The historic market square with the Knochenhauer-Amtshaus is also among the city’s most important landmarks. In addition Hildesheim has also developed in recent years as a hub for urban creations and streetart. Projects like NORDSTADT WANDGALERIE or STADTFELD ZEIGT GESICHT bring large-scale portraits and artworks to residential neighborhoods, fostering a new sense of connection to the urban space. The KULTURFARBRIK LÖSEKE or in short KUFA serves as a central actor for alternative culture and regularly supports graffiti, music, and art projects. Places like the ROSE PARKHAUS also demonstrate how functional architecture is visually enhanced by streetart and graffiti. Initiatives such as SPRÜHWERK and HILDESHEIMER ART further support legal spaces, workshops, and artistic projects in public spaces. We initially started with individual pages on halls and spots, but thanks to photographer and collective member IRXENSCHMOIZ, we ended up with so many photos that we’ve now turned them into a map. How does the map work? All the buttons on the map are links to a photo gallery of the spot, sometimes with only one photo, sometimes with heaps of photos or even a full article. The different symbols explain various categories of the streetart and graffiti artworks. In the navigation of the map on the left you can find the several markers sorted by the categories and it´s possible to hide or fade these layers.
