Kino Intimes in Friedrichshain is one of the oldest continuously operating cinemas in the German capital. Its history dates back to 1909, when it opened under the name “Lichtspiele des Ostens” (“Motion Pictures of the East”). For more than a century, the cinema has maintained its independent spirit and remains an important venue for arthouse films, international productions, and Berlin’s vibrant local film culture.
With its iconic neon sign and nostalgic atmosphere, Kino Intimes has become a cultural landmark in its own right. But what makes the building especially distinctive, however, is its exterior. Over the years, the cinema’s façade has evolved into a unique canvas for urban art that extends far beyond conventional advertising. Nearly all the ground level surface is covered with layers of paste-ups, stickers, stencils, tags, and streetart interventions.
New works constantly appear while older pieces are partially covered, altered, or incorporated into new compositions. As a result, the building functions as an open archive of Berlin’s street art scene, reflecting the creative energy and ongoing transformation of Friedrichshain. The dense accumulation of images, collages, lettering, and artistic or political messages turns Kino Intimes into more than a cinema – it is a living artwork embedded in the public space.
