The MILCHSACKFABRIK in the Gutleutviertel district traces its origins to the former printing ink factory of Dr. Carl Milchsack. The company produced printing inks on the site until it ceased operations in 1999. As early as the mid-1990s, Peter Peters, a grandson of the company’s founder, began renting out individual spaces to artists. Gradually, the former factory site evolved into a cultural hub featuring studios, theater, music, and events.
Today, the site is used, among others, by TANZHAUS WEST, which was founded in 2003 and has become an integral part of Frankfurt’s club culture. Also located on the grounds is STUDIO 294, which offers spaces for artists from various disciplines and hosts exhibitions, photography, film, and events, among other things. Another important space is the theater LANDUNGSBRÜCKEN, which shows regularly stage plays, performances and discussions. Time by time the grounds are also home of the FARBENFABRIK FLOHMARKT, a colorful art and flea market. In 2020 the site was transferred from Peter Peters to KEG; in 2021 it was acquired by the City of Frankfurt. The goal is to preserve the site as a cultural and creative hub. The site’s former industrial use remains visible to this day through its buildings and character, covered with numerous urban artworks, graffiti, streetart and installations.

In 2018, we interviewed photographer, graffiti artist, and then-director NIKO NEUWIRTH about his projects and STUDIO 294. Sadly, he passed away in an accident on 1st May 2022. Rest in peace, and we miss you. The podcast is in German, but there’s also an English version available as an article with lots of photos. In addition, in May 2023, we interviewed LISA PEIL from STUDIO 294 about the “Worte West” literature festival taking place at the Milchsackfabrik at that time. That interview is also in German.
