GERMANY: Streetart Frankfurt – Sachsenhausen – Gutzkow – Frankfurter Kunstsäule – DANIEL HARTLAUB & FLORIAN KOCH

The FRANKFURTER KUNSTSÄULE, or in English „Frankfurt Art Column“, is a public art project located in the Sachsenhausen district. Since 2017, a former advertising column has been transformed into an open-air gallery, providing a unique exhibition space for contemporary art. Three times a year, new artistic works are presented, making art freely accessible to everyone in the urban environment. The project was initiated by two local curators which are the artist DANIEL HARTLAUB and culture manager FLORIAN KOCH.

Their idea emerged from a successful art intervention during the Luminale 2016, when Hartlaub artistically redesigned an advertising column in front of the Museum of Communication. The positive public response inspired both to develop the concept further and establish a permanent platform for contemporary art in public space. Their aim was to create an exhibition venue beyond the traditional boundaries of museums and galleries, allowing people from all backgrounds to encounter art in their everyday lives. By transforming a conventional advertising medium into a cultural landmark, the FRANKFURTER KUNSTSÄULE encourages spontaneous engagement with contemporary artistic practices.

Unlike artworks displayed in a museum, the installations here can only be fully experienced by walking around it. This creates a dynamic interaction between the artwork, the viewer, and the surrounding cityscape. Over the years, this special art space has become an established part of Frankfurt’s cultural landscape, regularly featuring works by regional, national, and international artists and fostering dialogue between contemporary art and the public sphere.

On 15th April in 2026 we could record an interview with DANIEL HARTLAUB and talk about the starting idea, the concept and the develpment of this great project. You can listen to the interview if you understand German, but also an English transcriped translation will follow soon. Below the audio there are several images of the grandiose artworks shown on the FRANKFURTER KUNSTSÄULE during the past years. The photos and event texts for this page are from the organizers, thanks for the contribution! And keep on doing many more exhibitions!

„Im Rausch der Tiefe“  –  „In the Thrall of the Depths“  –  19th September 2018 till 29th March 2019  –  FRANK KUNERT

Photographer FRANK KUNERT lived in Frankfurt for many years, so his interest in water kiosks is rooted in his personal history. With a subtle sense of humor, he titled his work „Im Rausch der Tiefe“, or in English something like „In the Thrall of the Depths“. The artist’s world can be explored in three photo books: balconies without doors, highway tunnels running through residential buildings, and oversized cooking pots serving as swimming pools. The artist literally builds a house for his ideas by staging them in small model sets. He gives three-dimensional form to thought experiments and wordplay, thereby making them tangible.

FRANK KUNERT’s affectionate yet ironic view of people and the meticulous depiction of every single object lend his work wit and lightness. His elaborately constructed, glued, painted, and photographed models – captured with a large-format analog camera – are reflections of our fears, hardships, and dreams. Sometimes tragic, sometimes funny, they reveal the absurdities of everyday life. The blue round art space illuminated the fall and winter with this work. To accompany the exhibition, the Frankfurt-based publisher METERMORPHOSEN released the memory game „Kleinanzeigen“, which pairs 36 of KUNERT’s motifs with matching ad texts. FLORIAN KOCH spoke at the opening.
