From Bricks to Pixels – Franco German Connection – NEXT NOW
On 1st and 2nd July 2022 the awesome urban art project NEXT NOW took place on the RAW area close to the skate hall. The free entry happening was a multidisciplinary event gathering various talents of urban and digital arts around the topic of peace. On two days the visitors could admire non stop live painting on 1500m² from 40 fantastic artists from France and Germany. As well several great DJ sets from VIDEO GAME VANDALS gave an accoustic background, there was an art shop from the POP UP MUSEUM OF COLOURS and of course a bar with cold drinks.
On screens the domunentary „Berlin spricht Wände“ (=“Berlin speaks walls“) by EMUS PRIMUS and the interactive web documentary „We speak hip Hop“ by DAVID BOISSEAUX-CHICAL and VINA IRIDJÉE were shown. On both event days the organizers invited for stencil workshops and talk roundtables about „Education to peace and peace construction through art“ and „Current state of the urban art scene“.
The organizers about the event: NEXT NOW is not a festival, neither an exhibition, nor a show. It is an hybrid event involving different kinds of cooperation and exchanges around urban and digital culture and arts, with a focus on the topic of peace for this first edition. NEXT NOW is a visceral reaction to the dismantlement of our scene – the free scene – the one where people can meet, connect, play, engage, and experiment. It is about reclaiming the city despite the speculated housing crisis and gentrification processes – which are anything but new, while reaching new extents and spaces every day – our spaces.
NEXT NOW is a real challenge. Of course, this was a last minute chance to do something in this space. Even though we are running on a tiny budget – which we as artists are used to… the limitations become sources of creativity, and struggles become lessons of adaptation and flexibility! As a general reminder, generosity still exists, like friendship and trust. Together, they can initi de frames to facilitate creation and fun. We take what is being offered to enable cultural and artistic exchange. We share our privilege with those who need a stage. We are so thrilled by this opportunity, how could we not make it something special.
Urban art’s essence is its ephemerality. It is very related to peace in as both of them need to be nurtured and given space and energy to exist. None of them should be taken for granted. Each of them draws its beauty out of a sense of fragility, existing despite the chaos – or rather together with it. – NEXT NOW
