Berlin, January 25th, 2013 – At the award ceremony for the “Social City 2012” competition, the Hellersdorf Wohntheke was awarded one of the coveted prizes. The Wohntheke, of which STADT UND LAND is a founding member, has been committed to the residential area of the Hellersdorf housing estate for twelve years. In the jury’s laudatory speech, it says: “The jury recognizes that despite the competition between the housing companies in the Wohntheke, even in times of high vacancy rates, they have managed to work together in a spirit of cooperation, trust and equality.
This has improved the external perception of Germany’s second-largest residential city, contributed to a harmonious appearance in the residential environment and in the building stock and promoted coordinated cooperation between the housing industry and the various players in community work. The twelve years of cooperation are proof of the sustainability of the collaboration and this without state funding. The funds invested are disproportionate to the “yield” of a socially balanced and stable resident population and at the same time a strengthened “self-esteem” of the residents.” By supporting local initiatives and associations as well as high-profile activities and joint events, the housing companies organized in the Wohntheke repeatedly present the advantages of Hellersdorf as a residential location.
The large Hellersdorf housing estate is a place where people feel at home, where they find their center of life and ultimately a home. Members of the Wohntheke are STADT UND LAND, WVB Centuria, Wohnungsbauge-nossenschaft “Hellersdorfer Kiez” eG, Grundstücksgemeinschaft Zerbster Str. 48-78 GbR, HS Hausinvest GbR, WoBeGe Wohnbauten- und Beteiligungsgesellschaft mbH, HELLE MITTE Zentrumsmanagement, Wohnungsbaugenossenschaft Wuhletal eG. A total of ten outstanding examples of social commitment to improving neighborhoods were awarded a prize at the Albert Schweitzer Gymnasium in Neukölln.
A further ten initiatives received a recognition award. A total of 171 projects applied for the awards nationwide. The award-winning projects focus on promoting integration, cohesion by strengthening the local economy, education and culture, direct help for disadvantaged people in the neighborhood and the coexistence of different owners in a district. The German Association of Cities, the AWO Arbeiterwohlfahrt Bundesverband e.V., the GdW Bundesverband deutscher Wohnungs- und Immobilienunternehmen, the Schader-Stiftung, the vhw – Bundesverband für Wohnen und Stadtentwicklung e. V. and, for the first time, the German Tenants’ Association (DMB) have jointly organized the “Social City Prize 2012” competition. – STADT UND LAND
