The organizers about the project: The citizens‘ initiative UBI KLIZ was founded in November 1989 in the northern district of Friedrichshain. The abbreviation in German stands for „Unabhängige BürgerInitiative – Kommunikatives Leben in Zusammenarbeit“, which would mean in English „Independent Citizens‘ Initiative – Communicative Living in Cooperation“.
From the outset it has focused on tenant and social counseling and anti-racism work. We work on a voluntary and independent basis in the association’s premises, the “Mieterladen”. Our work is non-profit in the sense that it promotes consumer protection and advice, culture, international understanding, and public education. You can get an insight into this work here.We are active in several networks, such as the Berlin Alliance Against Rising Rents, the Initiative Against the Right, the worldwide campaign to abolish the death penalty, the Anti-Nuclear Alliance, and others.
Our activities range from acting as multipliers to co-organizing and implementing various events and campaigns. We provide you with information on how you can take advantage of our free counseling services, inform you about current and past project work, and, of course, about our origins and development.
In the early days, we had 11 people who were regularly involved, but personal changes over the years led to a decline in active members. At the same time, however, the amount of volunteer work increased because there was simply more to do and it had to be shared among fewer people. Even today, the amount of volunteer work has not decreased and is shared among five different active members. So if you are also looking for a challenging hobby, perhaps you would like to get involved with us and support the work of the association? Feel free to ask, because there is more than enough unpaid work to be done in all areas.
For example we need help for attending legal consultations and organizing and displaying accompanying information material. Also for co-organizing and conducting information events or exhibitions or managing information stands at street festivals. We need help with occasional deep cleaning, including flower care. As well you can implement your own ideas. We need support with the website maintenance and help with maintenance, like painting, minor repairs.
