GERMANY: Architecture Herford – Goeben 2 – Contemporary Art Museum – MARTA – FRANK GEHRY

With its flowing and tilting walls, the MARTA MUSEUM in Herford, East Westphalia, is one of the most unusual museum buildings in the world. For the facade, the American star architect FRANK GEHRY chose dark red bricks, which contrast with the bright stainless steel roof and the white plastered core of the building. Check out as well the individual pages especially for the autonomous center FlaFla with its colorful wall facades and the page for urban artworks throughout the city.

FRANK GEHRY, or with full name FRANK OWEN GEHRY was a Canadian architect and designer from Toronto who lived in California from 1947 onwards. He was born on February 28th in 1929, and died on December 5th in 2025 in Santa Monica, USA. In 1989, he received the Pritzker Prize for his deconstructivist architecture, and in 2009, The New York Times called him the most acclaimed American architect since FRANK LLOYD WRIGHT.

The development of the museum’s collection began with the construction of the MARTA, which opened in 2005. The diverse exhibition program is reflected in its striking works. Numerous site-specific installations have been acquired permanently for the exhibition collection. It comprises around 500 works by approximately 170 artists, many of them large-format pieces of contemporary art. The collection includes outstanding works that also address questions of design and architecture – in keeping with the museum’s mission and the original concept as a „House of Furniture“. A defining element of the collection is the large number of site-specific works that establish a unique relationship with the building design by FRANK GEHRY.

Another addition is MARTA HOCH 2, a space dedicated to meeting, participating, and getting artistically active yourself. This new offer is designed as an open environment that fosters creative processes and community. Whether it’s for exchange and encounters, workshops and art projects, or learning and fun. What makes this place special is that residents of Herford and organizations in the region actively participate in shaping the program and the use of the space. MARTA HOCH 2 is part of the project „Third Places: Houses for Culture and Encounter in Rural Areas“ and is funded by the Ministry of Culture and Science of the State of North Rhine-Westphalia. Every Wednesday there are regular meetings, as well check out their calendar for numerous other creative events.  –  Marta
