Luise Temple

The Luise Temple on Peacock Island, with its north-facing façade, is integrated into the forest edge on the northwestern part of the island. This memorial hall was built by architects HEINRICH GENTZ, ALBERT DIETRICH SCHADOW and KARL FRIEDRICH SCHINKEL in 1829 and commemorates the fact that Peacock Island was a favorite residence of Louise, Duchess of Mecklenburg-Strelitz, or simply Queen Louise. She lived from March 10, 1776, to July 19, 1810. The design of the bust was made by sculptor CHRISTIAN DANIEL RAUCH and preceded by a portrait bust of the queen from 1816, which the artist had created on behalf of the king. The new version, in which the diadem was replaced by a wreath of asters, was created in 1817.
