Johann Kunckel von Löwenstern (1630/1638 – 1703)
On this site, the so-called „Kunckelwiese“ Meadow, from 1686 to 1689 there once stood a secret laboratory, a glass works with furnace, as well as the house of the famous natural scientist and glassmaker, JOHANN KUNCKEL. At the end of October 1685 he had received the island as a gift from the Elector Frederick William (who reigned 1640-1688), so that he would be able to experiment without being observed. Here he was also able to carry out his experiments for the production of colored glass, his most important result being the development of the technology for making ruby glass. Only the Elector, who was interested in his research, was allowed to visit him.

Kunckel, who came from a family of glassmakers, first became an apothecary. From 1670 to 1678 he analyzed and tested the findings of alchemistic writings of the time while in the service of the Saxon Elector Johann Georg II. In 1678 he followed a call to Brandenburg, where he spent his most successful years. In 1679 his most famous work was published, the „Ars Vitraria“ or „Die vollkomene Glasmacherkunst“ (The Art of Perfect Glassmaking) and he became the leaseholder of the Potsdam glassworks. After the death of his benefactor, Elector Frederick William, a lawsuit was filed against him and at the beginning of 1689, all of the buildings on the island were destroyed by arson. In 1692 Kunckel was called to Stockholm by Swedish King Karl XI, who raised him to noble rank.
