Beelitzer Jagdschirm  –  Beelitz Hunter’s Blind

Erected in 1796 by Royal Master Carpenter JOHANN GOTTLIEB BRENDEL for a hunt of King Frederick Willam II on the Royal hunting grounds in the Beelitz Hill’s, the hunter’s blind was relocated to an artificially built island at the southeast tip of Peacock Island at the behest of the King. The half-timbered construction with wood veneer façade was possibly constructed for relocation from the very onset.

Nervertheless, the building was to represent high architectural ambitions. On the main floor there was a salon for the hunting party, which was furnished with curtains and wallpaper in „Schweinfurt green“. Remains of this historical wallpaper have been preserved on the walls. The hunters shot aquatic birds from loopholes on the basement level.

The bark covering of the hunter’s blind served on the one hand as camouflage for the building. On the other hand, prop buildings with an encasement made of bark were an expression of the affection for nature and belonged to the customary repertory of a late 18th-century landscape park.

With the new understanding of nature that took place during the Age of Enlightenment, hunting customs also changed. Instead of the great show of the splendid hunts of the Baroque era, the Prussian Royal Court preferred intimate huntig parties with an enhanced experience of nature. Like lawn bowling, clay pigeon shooting, music, and dance, the hunt was regarded a spot enjoyment and leisure.
