Pfaueninsel  –  Peacock Island  –  Main Page

In 1793 the Prussian King Frederick William I took possession of Pfaueninsel (Peacock Island“) in order to create a park. At that time the island, which has an area of 67 hectares, was still called Kaninchenwerder („Rabbit Islet“). In 1685 the Great Elector had entrusted it to the chemist and glass specialist 1. Kunckel who had maintained a secret laboratory here. In 1794 the Palace, which is oriented towards the New Garden, was completed on the wester tip of the island in only one year. At the same time the Dairy was built in the northwest, followed in 1796 by the Caretaker’s House close to the ferry. Frederick William III chose Peacock Island as his summer residence. Starting in 1806 the Royal Gardener J. A. F. Fintelmann restructured the island into an ornamental farm, From 1816 to 1834 Fintelmann and J. Lenne redesigned the island into the landscaped park as it is today. Originally the King“ the menagerie, designed by Lenne, was given up again in 1842, its animals then comprising the basis for establishing the Berlin Zoological Gardens. Peacock Island, which is on the UNESCO world cultural heritage list, has been a wildlife preserve since 1924. Check out the several spots on the island via the subpages below!
