GERMANY: Streetart Bielefeld - Mindener Legal Walls - Graffiti and Urban Art Collection

Bielefeld – the city that supposedly doesn’t even exist – has a “Hall of Fame” since spring 2025 – but which isn’t one (yet). Eight “walls” of different widths, consisting of L-shaped stone elements in the finest exposed concrete, each around 3 meters high, have been erected by the city of Bielefeld between Hochstraße and the railroad tracks in Mindener Straße for around 300,000 Euros in order to offer sprayers a legal area for their art, pompously – and falsely – dubbed a “Hall of Fame”. As elsewhere, those responsible are confusing a simple “legal wall”, on which anyone can let off steam and try their hand, with a “Hall of Fame”. Only a few pieces and styles that I saw on 15th July 2025 deserved to be worthy of a Hall of Fame. There are still too many tags, too many toys at work. The few better pieces and styles (currently) still have to be ranked 4 to 6 on my King scale of 0 to 10. So there’s still a lot of room for improvement. Nevertheless, every new legal wall is beneficial and welcome. Time will tell whether “fame” (=quality) will really prevail or whether it’s just toys trying out legally. – Irxnschmoiz

City of Bielefeld – Press Release 8th November 2024 : Bielefeld is getting a new cultural and meeting place in a green setting: a so-called “Hall of Fame,” or public graffiti area, is being created on Mindener Straße. In the future, anyone will be able to display their art with spray cans here – and completely legally. A total of eight individual concrete elements, each three meters high, will be installed in the green space below the railroad tracks. The elements will vary in length from three to 12 meters. A total of 276 square meters will be available for spraying in the future. The elements will be placed in such a way that the trees in the green corridor are protected. The Hall of Fame is being managed in cooperation between the City of Bielefeld’s Department of Culture and the association hoch2 e.V., which has already designed other public spaces in Bielefeld with graffiti in cooperation with the city, for example the pillars below the Ostwestfalendamm on Mindener Straße.

In 2019, the Culture and Youth Welfare Committees commissioned the administration to establish a Hall of Fame in Bielefeld. This was followed by extensive inspections of the planned site on Mindener Straße. Due to the coronavirus pandemic, the war of aggression against Ukraine, and the associated bottlenecks in the construction industry, the construction project had to be postponed several times. Construction work finally began on November 6, 2024, and the site was completed in December. The Hall of Fame is managed by the Department of Culture and the hoch2 association. The project is funded by the Ministry of Home Affairs of North Rhine-Westphalia with funds from the Heimatwerkstatt program. – City of Bielefeld – 8th November 2024
