The city of Bremerhaven about the Kaiserhafen: The Kaiserhafen dates back to 1872, when the Bremen Senate decided to build a third harbor basin in Bremerhaven (after the Old Harbor and the New Harbor). This basin, designed by the then Bremerhaven port construction director Carl Friedrich Hanckes (1829-1891), was completed in 1875 and had its own lock on the Weser since 1876, which was filled in in 1937. This extension was soon no longer sufficient to meet the constantly increasing demands of Norddeutscher Lloyd (founded in 1857), by far the largest shipping company in the area. In 1881, the existing harbor basin (now Kaiserhafen I) was slightly enlarged, but it was not until the significant expansion of the Kaiserhafen in the period before the First World War that sufficient capacity was initially provided. The corresponding expansion work began in 1892 and was led by the Bremerhaven port construction directors Rudolf Rudloff (1851-1922) and Federico Claussen (1865-1940). Kaiserhafen II was built between 1906 and 1908 and extended between 1925 and 1927. The Kaiserhafen III (1907 to 1909) and the Verbindungshafen (1908 to 1915) were also built. The large-scale construction measures also included the Kaiserschleuse lock (usable length: 223.2 meters), which went into operation in 1897 and was the largest lock structure in the world at the time. It could accommodate and lock through the largest NDL steamers at the time, and due to the cramped conditions in Bremerhaven, NDL had moved its handling operations to Nordenham in 1890. – City of Bremerhaven
