THIERRY NOIR and the Berlin Wall mural painting
Colorful comic-style heads are THIERRY NOIR‘s trademark. In April 1984, the French street artist began painting large-scale heads on the west side of the Berlin Wall in Kreuzberg. Together with CHRISTOPHE BOUCHET, THIERRY NOIR is one of the inventors of Wall painting. The third generation of the Wall, which was erected in 1975, offered ideal conditions for this with its flat surface. “I never wanted to try to embellish the Wall, because that is practically impossible,” the artist explained his approach.
The Wall ran 43 km through the middle of Berlin. It was part of the deadly border fortification that divided the city in two and separated West Berlin from the surrounding area for a further 120 km. At least 140 people were killed at the Berlin Wall alone. After the fall of the Wall in November 1989, the border fortifications were almost completely dismantled. In many places around the world, Wall segments still remind us of the division of Berlin and the Cold War.
