Homage to the “Sandmännchen”
The term “Sandman” is probably also known in other languages, it is the same word in English like in German. But “Sandmännchen” is a trivialization of the name and refers to a very specific little man from German television. It was originated on the channels RBB from Berlin and MDR, which means “Mittel Deutscher Rundfunkt”, in English “Middle German Broadcasting”.
For more than 60 years, the Sandman has been sending children to bed in the evening with the famous short movies which aired the first time in 1959. Featuring a bedtime story designed not to upset, the nightly show is a regular ritual for millions of children (and their parents) to end the day and get a good night’s sleep.
The short and amusing clips are a family program in which three generations take part while watching. The statues and paintings we show you here on the urban art map are tributes and homages to this great iconic figure and to the creator GERHARD BEHREND, who lived in the Berlin district of Mahlsdorf from 1929 to 2006.
