When increasing sea traffic and larger ships exceeded the capacity of the Old Port, former building councillor Jacobus Johannes van Ronzelen was commissioned to plan and build a second harbor complex. Works began in 1847 and the New Harbour was put into operation in 1852. The area is a tide-independent harbor basin in the Bremerhaven Mitte district, between the city center and the Weser dyke and slightly north of the Old Port. Meanwhile there is even a newer international port on a very much bigger scale, and because the shipping agencies moved to another spot, there were a lot of free buildings and open space for other architecture. The now old „New Port“ became also kind of a residency area with expensive modern and unfortunately boring block houses on the water, still the location and the look out of the window is great. Also quite a lot of shipping is still happening here as well, but on a much smaller scale. The bigger logistics get done on the international harbour father north.
