Exhibition: Aus der Erinnerung – SEBASTIAN VOLZ
From 21st October till 2nd December 2023 the fascinating artworks of SEBASTIAN VOLZ could be admired in the exhibition “Aus der Erinnerung” in the NORDHEIMER SCHEUNE. The title would mean in English “From Memory”. Painting and the art of painting can be described by the Italian polymath LEON BATTISTA ALBERTI as a window to the world. PAUL KLEE rejects this understanding and instead coined the phrase ‘Art does not reproduce the visible, but makes visible’. SEBASTIAN VOLZ takes up this understanding of art in the title of his exhibition; however, he also knows that it is currently being called into question by the overabundance of information. The Korean-German philosopher, cultural scientist and author BYUNG-CHUL HAN, among others, refers to ‘The Crisis of Narration’ in his publication published in 2023. HAN writes: ‘Today, everyone is talking about narratives. Paradoxically, the inflationary use of narratives betrays a narrative crisis. In the midst of the noisy storytelling, there is a narrative vacuum that manifests itself as a lack of meaning and disorientation’ (Byung-Chul Han, The Crisis of Narration). This circumstance is pretty much exactly what SEBASTIAN VOLZ was concerned with when preparing his exhibition.
Based on this, VOLZ decided to investigate the narratives of art history. His painting “Lovers” draws pictorially on the maw of Leviathan, which owes its existence to Canaanite, Ugaritic and biblical myths and in Anglo-Saxon art of the 9th century becomes the maw of hell, in THOMAS HOBBES a metaphor for the omnipotence of the state and, in more recent times, a cipher for the dominant role of the financial role of the financial markets and nature. But it can also stand for the underworld in Greek mythology and thus for Hades, from which the gifted singer Orpheus wants to free Eurydice.
