HAND IN HAND FOR TOLERANCE

The seven Buddy Bear sculptures are standing together hand in hand. Their design visualizes Berlin’s diversity. They illustrate the life-affirming atmosphere of people living together peacefully in this city.

Tolerance and mutual respect provide the foundation to make this possible. The designs of the sculptures show people whose roots are in all the different parts of the world. Berliners with diverse cultural backgrounds, different religions, of all skin colours, with diverse concepts of life and various orientations. They are all part of this open, cosmopolitan city. They all belong. They are Berlin.

WE ARE BERLIN!

The Berlin artist DAMIAN YVES ROHDE aka DYR WANDBRAND, who remained faithful to his street art roots after studying Fine Arts at the Berlin University of the Arts, created the group of sculptures “Hand in Hand for Tolerance”. Across the globe, DYR Wandbrand is well-known for painting murals. His distinctive colourful and unconventional style is unique. The inauguration of the Buddy Bears took place on May 13, 2022 and the installation of seven two-meter-tall statues will be presented on Wittenbergplatz for around half a year.

Who is behind the exhibition “Hand in Hand for Tolerance”?

The initiator of this art project is Buddy Bear Berlin. For 20 years now, the company based in Berlin has actively championed tolerance and international understanding in many different ways.

The United Buddy Bears exhibition, for example, has travelled the world with more than 140 international Buddy Bears since the beginning of the 2000s, capturing the imagination of people on all five continents with its appeal for peace and freedom.

In this context and coupled with a wide range of charity activities, over 2.5 million euros have already been generated for organizations helping children in need. Under the title “The Art of Tolerance”, the United Buddy Bears can be viewed at the Berlin zoo Tierpark Friedrichsfelde until further notice.

The exhibition United Buddy Bears – The Minis, with 1m tall sculptures a variation of the international unifying project, will be shown from 26 May until the end of October 2022 in the gardens “Gärten der Welt” in Berlin-Marzahn.  –  Buddy Bear

Wir sind Berlin  –  We are Berlin

Ever since the Huguenots, people from all over the world have always come to Berlin.

Today, people from more than 190 nations live in our city. And they all belong to Berlin.

In Berlin, people with highly diverse orientations can develop freely.

Whether you are a Berliner is not a question of the colour of your skin. It is a question of attitude.

Different cultures create diversity: Being open and cosmopolitan enriches the city.

Tolerance and mutual respect are prerequisites for living together in peace.

Berlin is open to citizens of different faiths.
